Most travel guides to Hội An are written from somewhere else - assembled from other guides, press trips, or a long weekend. This one isn't. Discover Hội An is written by someone who lives here, rides this coast most weeks, and has watched it change: watched Cửa Đại erode back to a strip, watched An Bằng inherit the crowds, learned which beach still has deep, clear water in the punishing heat of August.

That's the whole point of this site. Not "here are the ten things to do in Hội An" - you can find that anywhere. This is the local read: where we actually swim, which ferry crossing saves you an hour, which famous stop to skip, and which unmarked one is worth the detour. Which shops are new in town, and which tailors are going to create impeccable pieces that last.

what "first-hand" actually means here

Every place on this site has been visited, usually more than once. When we say the đò at Bến đò Gành runs from 4am, that a beach hut near Thanh Tân does spicy pineapple rice that's better than it has any right to be, or that a homestay sits right in front of a fish market that kicks off at 4:30am - those come from being there, not from a search result.

Where something is second-hand - a price that may have drifted, a detail from a guide rather than our own eyes — we say so. Where we haven't been yet, we don't pretend we have. A guide is only as good as its honesty about its own limits.

who discover Hoi An is for

Independent travellers who'd rather have a great day than an easy one. People who'll rent a scooter, chase a side quest down an unmarked lane, and trade a resort pool for water that's actually clear.
