Where to Stay in Hội An

Here's the good news: in Hội An, there's no wrong answer — only trade-offs. The town is tiny and flat, the beach is a ten-minute cycle from the lanterns, and almost everywhere sits within a short ride of everywhere else. So the real question isn't which hotel — it's which version of Hội An do you want to wake up to? Old Town buzz and riverside lantern glow? Sand between your toes and sunrise over the sea? Rice paddies, roosters, and total quiet? Pick your morning. Book accordingly.

In & Around the Old Town

Stay here to fall asleep to the hum of the Ancient Town and roll out of bed into it. You're steps from the lanterns, the night market, the tailors, and a hundred coffee spots. The catch: it's the busiest, priciest corner, big hotels are scarce (think boutiques and homestays), and the pedestrian-only streets mean cars can't reach your door during peak hours. Worth it if atmosphere is why you came.

Staying with kids? Skip this one completely. It’s louder than you think it is and bedtime is a nightmare. Though sidewalks are becoming more common, it’s a big miss for us. Travel into Old town, don’t stay there.

An Bàng Beach

The sweet spot for beach lovers who still want life around them. Soft sand, seafront restaurants, sunrise swims, and a laid-back village feel — all a flat 10-minute bike ride or short Grab from Old Town. Homestays and boutique stays dominate; big resorts are thinner here than at Cửa Đại. Best of both worlds without committing fully to either.

An Bàng vs Tân Thành: Same Coast, Different Souls

They run into each other along the same stretch of shoreline, but these two beaches attract very different crowds — and picking right depends on what you want from a beach day.

An Bàng (for short stayers) is the classic. Wide golden sand, rows of loungers, beach bars pushing cold ones and fresh seafood, and enough buzz to keep the day social. It's the postcard beach — swim, eat, sunset beer, repeat — and the easiest to reach, a flat 10-minute cycle from the Old Town. Come here when you want life around you, a proper meal steps from the water, and zero effort.

Tân Thành (for long stayers) is an artier, quieter sibling just up the coast. This is Hội An's creative strip — indie cafés, art spaces, live music, and a bohemian pulse you won't find on the main drag. Less lounger-lined resort, more slow-coffee-and-good-conversation. The sand's a touch rougher and the scene's more low-key, which is exactly why the in-the-know crowd drifts here. Come for the vibe, the caffeine, and the escape from the crowds. This is a very popular place for long-stayers, and families - so if you’re looking for a neighbourhood that’s jam packed with kids - stay here.

All-day sun, food, and social energy? An Bàng. Coffee, art, and calm? Tân Thành. Or do what the locals do — bounce between both.

Cẩm Thanh & the Rice Paddies

Between town and beach lies the green belt — coconut palms, water buffalo, and paddies glowing gold at sunset. This is where you'll find quiet boutique resorts and villas with pools, room to breathe, and families who want space. You'll rely on bikes, buggies, or Grab to get anywhere, but that's rather the point. Slow mornings, zero crowds.

Try to find a place to stay near Ba le Market. Here, you’ll be close to the action, juice stands, market fruit and restaurants. You’ll be in the action at one of our favourite places in town, but also moments away from the serene quiet of the rice fields.

Cửa Đại Beach

Big-resort territory — pools, spas, sea views, and full-service comfort a short hop south of An Bàng. Ideal if you want to plant yourself in one place and be pampered, with day trips into town as needed. Do check current beach conditions before booking; the shoreline here has shifted over the years and varies stretch to stretch.

Cẩm Nam & the Riverside

For the quietest, most local stay of all, cross to the island side. Homestays among the corn fields and river channels, cheap eats, and a slower pulse — with the Old Town still just a bridge away. Great value, great calm, best for travellers happy to pedal.

Outside of Town

We'll always tell you straight. Skip the big resorts coming into town - as kid-friendly as they may appear. You're reliant on taxis or long rides for every coffee, meal, and lantern stroll, and that distance adds up fast over a stay. On top of that, pool and beach access there has become increasingly tangled with shifting regulations. Plenty of stays closer in give you the same comfort without the caveats.
