Wakaku: The Best Sushi in Hội An (and a Birthday Cake You Won't Forget)

Hội An isn't what you would consider to be a sushi town. It's a cao lầu, white-rose, bánh-mì town, and rightly so. But when we want to mark an occasion, and we’re craving crisp, delicious sushi; like for a birthday, a proper splurge - there's only one place we book: Wakaku, the Japanese restaurant on the ground floor of the Hotel Royal Hoi An. It is, hands down, the best sushi in Hội An - and worth the splurge, every single time.
The sushi birthday cake
Here's the reason to come, and the thing no other restaurant in town does: Wakaku makes a sushi birthday cake. We celebrated a birthday here ourselves, and it's a genuine event — not a gimmick. The cake arrives wreathed in dry-ice fog that cascades down the sides and pools across the table, the whole thing lit up like something out of a film. Then it settles, and underneath the theatre is a proper tiered arrangement of sushi that's plenty for two people to share as a meal in itself.
You don't need to pre-order it, either — we just showed up and asked. (Though if you're planning it around an actual birthday, a quick call ahead never hurts.)
Sushi birthday
We go with the nigiri version, but you can have it built with sashimi instead — your call, both are beautifully done. The fish is fresh, the presentation is immaculate, and the whole plate is designed to be shared, which makes it perfect for a two-person celebration.
What it costs (as of July 2026): the Birthday Cake of Maki & Nigiri — the one we order — runs 950,000₫ (about $36.50 USD), and the Birthday Cake of Sashimi is 1,450,000₫. Either one is a shareable meal for two, not just a dessert. If you'd rather a smaller version of the same idea, the Wakaku "boats" are a bit less — 700,000₫ for maki and nigiri, 900,000₫ for sashimi.
And save room for the yuzu gelato — 60,000₫ a scoop. Bright, sharp, citrusy, and the ideal palate-cleanser to end on — it's become the thing we look forward to almost as much as the cake.
Is It Worth It? (Yes)
Wakaku sits inside the Hotel Royal, one of the few true luxury hotels in Hội An, and the setting matches the food — quiet, elegant, a world away from the lantern-lit bustle ten minutes up the road. There's a nice bit of romance baked into the place, too: the restaurant is named after Wakaku, the Hội An woman at the centre of the hotel's founding love story with a Japanese merchant named Sotaro. So the whole evening — Japanese craft, Hội An setting, a celebration — is on-theme before you've even ordered.
This isn't an everyday spot, and it isn't priced like one. But for a birthday, an anniversary, or a night when you want to feel like you've properly treated yourself, it's the best sushi in town and an evening you'll actually remember.
